There is often a debate between fishermen over the best fishing line for trout, fluorocarbon or monofilament. Our personal recommendation is to opt for the fluorocarbon line as it is completely invisible in the water and can sometimes help you to land a fish that may have been spooked by a more visible monofilament line.
Most professional anglers are in agreement, often choosing the fluorocarbon line as it has several benefits over the monofilament line in the majority of fishing conditions; when it comes to trout at least.
Fluorocarbon line is much less visible than the monofilament line as it is completely transparent in the water. Trout have excellent eyesight, which makes them particularly line shy. This means will often stay away from thicker or colored lines.
Fluorocarbon lines are less elastic than monofilament lines too so they have much more sensitivity and feel when using them. We find it much easier to feel the bites when using the fluorocarbon line and often you can get a much harder hook set on the trout as the line isn’t as elastic. This does have its drawbacks of course.
The main downfall of the fluorocarbon line is the price. These lines can often be quite pricey compared to cheaper line options, which can often put people off. There is also a massive array of options out there which can seem daunting to new fishermen trying to select the correct line.
Fear not, we have done the legwork for you and put together a list of the best fluorocarbon fishing line for trout.

100% Fluorocarbon Lines
1. Trout Magnet Phantom 100% Fluorocarbon Fishing Leader Line
The first one on our list is one of our personal favorites. It’s 100% fluorocarbon and has 2, 3 and 4 pound test which is pretty much perfect for trout fishing. This is perfect for us as we always recommend anywhere between 2 and 6 pound test for the best experience.
This is almost totally invisible in the water and you can be sure the trout won’t see this one coming. It comes with a 50m line.
This will also work a treat for some other species too, so feel free to use it elsewhere.
2. Seaguar STS Trout/Steelhead Fluorocarbon Leader Fishing Line
Another great option here. We recommend going for the 4 pound line here for trout fishing. You could even go for the 6 pound test if you really feel like it but we would advise against any more than that.
As it says on the tin, this line is extremely strong and will stick it out against the toughest of abrasions. They claim that this is the first species specific fluorocarbon line which is very encouraging.
So if you’re looking to go after trout, steelhead and salmon this is your line!
The line sinks quickly on this line which is great for getting into the strike zone quickly for trout fishing. No top water baits of course!
3. Spiderwire EZ Fishing Line
Top-notch 100% fluorocarbon line here. We really enjoy using this one as it seems to handle a lot better and get less tangled than other fluorocarbon lines. Line management is much easier with this line.
You can get this in 2-15 pound test but as always we recommend between 2-6 pound test.
High sensitivity and invisible to the trout underwater, a perfect combo.
4. Berkley Vanish Fluorocarbon Fishing Line
The Berkley Vanish Fluorocarbon line lets you choose from 2 to 20 pound test. Go for the 2,4 or 6 pound test with 110 yard spool.
This line is 100% invisible too and is highly sensitive, giving you that important extra feel. This line is strong and resistant against abrasion which will certainly help.
This easy casting line has been a top seller for years in the US and Canada, so you’re in safe hands.
5. Seaguar Red Label 100% Fluorocarbon 200 Yard Fishing Line
The Seaguar Red Label offers 200 yards of fishing line and a choice of 4-15 pounds of fishing line, more than enough for what we need here.
Completely invisible, great tensile strength, high sensitivity and abrasion resistant. What’s not to love?
Fluorocarbon Coated Lines
6. Trout Magnet S.O.S. Fishing Line, 350yd (2lb, 4lb, 6lb Test)
Here we have the first of our coated lines. This is a copolymer line coated with fluorocarbon, making it practically invisible in the water. It can be helpful to have this set up as it is less dense than fluorocarbon, which will allow you to have more success with top bait.
These are specifically made for trout fishing and are pretty strong compared with other lines of the same diameter. This is a very highly rated and reviewed line so if you feel like trying something out other than 100% fluorocarbon then this is a great option.
7. KastKing FluoroKote Fishing Line – 100% Pure Fluorocarbon Coated
Offering options between 4 and 25 pond test, this is another fluorocarbon coated line that is loved by trout anglers. It comes with a generous 300 yard spool as well.
The same as the rest, this is an invisible line that will increase your catching chances in clearer waters.
This takes advantage of the qualities of both the copolymer line and the fluorocarbon line with the low line visibility and easier casting.
This is an extremely durable and versatile line that will fill you with confidence with its supreme knot strength without sacrificing sensitivity.
8. PowerFluoro Fishing Line, 100% Fluorocarbon Coated Fishing Line, Fishing Leader Line
Another hugely popular fluorocarbon coated fishing line. This is a favourite amongst trout fisherman due to its high strength and low visibility in the water. The hybrid line provides great shock resistance, shock and abrasion resistance.
Due to its increased density, this line will also sink pretty fast which is always handy for trout fishing.
We do love this line and would happily recommend it to all of our trout fishing friends!
Note that the pound test starts on the heavier side at 5 pounds, so we wouldn’t advise going much higher than that.
Things to consider:
Pound Test
As we mentioned multiple times in the reviews, the pound test is very important when it comes to trout fishing. There is no need to go much higher than 6 pound test in our opinion. Anything more would be necessary and would start to negatively impact you.
100% Fluorocarbon vs Coated Line
In our list, we have included both 100% fluorocarbon lines and fluorocarbon coated lines. The choice is yours and each of the have their own benefits.
100% fluorocarbon is generally less visible and is denser than the coated version, meaning that it will sink a lot faster.
The coated line will be easier to cast and the line management will be less of a hassle. The 100% is notorious for tangles and knots where you don’t want them. The coated line will also have more elasticity, which can be a benefit in certain situations.
We usually opt for the 100% fluorocarbon line, but there are many anglers out there who swear by the fluorocarbon coat.
Wrap Up
All the lines in this list are top notch and will be a great addition to your trout fishing arsenal.
These fluorocarbon lines are a fantastic way to try to outsmart the trout with their excellent eyesight whilst still having a line strong enough to land those bigger fish.
Our personal favorite that we have used with great success is the Seaguar STS Trout/Steelhead Fluorocarbon Leader Fishing Line. It’s 100% fluorocarbon and does the job perfectly.
Remember to consider the pound test, we recommend anywhere between 2-6 pound test.
